Big news for our Brazilians – Joelinton and Bruno Guimarães have both been called up to the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
In light of this news, I thought it would be the perfect time to look back at a few of the Brazilian stars who have graced St. James’ Park over the years - with a top 5 (in no particular order).
Mirandinha
Mirandinha holds a special place in Newcastle United history. He was the first Brazilian to play in English football, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations.
His arrival in 1987 was a ground-breaking moment, opening up a new market for Brazilian talent in England.
The most memorable moment came at Old Trafford, where he scored a stunning brace to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
His time at Newcastle may have been short, but his name is forever etched in the club’s history.
Joelinton
Signed for a club-record fee as a striker, Joelinton's early days at Newcastle were challenging, to say the least.
He faced criticism and struggled to find the net consistently. However, the arrival of Eddie Howe sparked an incredible transformation.
Howe recognized Joelinton's physicality, work rate, and hidden technical ability, redeploying him as a box-to-box midfielder.
This tactical masterstroke unlocked Joelinton's true potential and his performances earned him the Newcastle United Player of the Year award in 2022.
